The IC Scalable Cyber Department in MITRE’s Intelligence Center is based out of Bedford, MA. The department manages, guides, and directs approximately 50 technical staff in support of domain-specific work across a variety of our sponsors’ missions. The department work program delivers reverse engineering and cyber capabilities for sponsors in partnership with organizations across MITRE National Security (MNS) and MITRE Labs organizations. Our focus is on applying advanced reverse engineering and capability research to maintain and enhance the impact of our sponsors on their core missions. Our staff maintain deep expertise in the relevant complex systems involved, while continuing to grow awareness of new technologies and techniques as the field of cyber and technology evolve. We lead the development and implementation of advanced capabilities that are critical to meeting national security objectives, using a variety of approaches and techniques in the areas of Reverse Engineering and Low-Level Binary Analysis, Cross-Architecture System Analysis, Operating Systems Security, Network Systems and Protocol Analysis, Embedded Systems (such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Cellular Devices) and more.

Job Description:

As a Principal Task Leader for a reverse engineering and capabilities project, you will manage the day-to-day aspects of one component of a large task, leading the Bedford technical team. You will work with the Project Leader in ensuring the schedule and technical quality objectives for the program are met. You will be the primary technical interface for this task between MITRE, the sponsor, the sponsor’s multiple mission partners and the sponsor’s industrial partners. You will be responsible for the facilities, systems and logistics to support the Bedford portion of the task. In addition to this, you will also be expected to be a major technical contributor to the task, to bring technical innovation at a high level, but also deliver on technical capability for delivery. Due to the scope of the effort, the task lead is expected to spend 75% or more of their time on this specific project or related activities (partner project, MIP research, etc.).

As a principal member of the project, applicants should have extensive experience/expertise in all of the following specialty areas.

  • Multi-architecture level reverse engineering experience (e.g., x86, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Reverse Engineering and Debugging (e.g., Ghidra, GDB, QEMU and Emulators)
  • Operating System (OS) internals low-level/driver development
  • Development and debugging of capabilities in C/C++ and low-level assembly for embedded platforms
  • Reverse engineering and characterization of complex systems
  • Analysis of network systems and protocols
  • Computer networking and security
  • Vulnerability Discovery and Analysis
  • Leadership of a team of engineers on a complex technical task
  • Engagement with sponsors and their industry partners in both a strategic and tactical role

Roles & Responsibilities:

The task lead is ultimately responsible for the delivery of technical capabilities for the sponsor mission, along with all the dimensions included. That includes, but is not limited to, the following specific responsibilities:

  • Work with the project leader and sponsor to set the technical direction of the task
  • Coordinate development and integration efforts with external partners
  • Deliver domain / technical expertise in the areas mentioned above
  • Deliver strong leadership in developing complex capabilities for the government sponsor
  • Manage product development and testing schedules
  • Ensure technical quality of deliverables
  • Manage the project classified facilities, property, and resources in Bedford

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • An active TS/SCI with polygraph
  • 10 years of experience in reverse engineering, cyber and capabilities development
  • Experience developing and debugging capabilities in C/C++ and assembly in embedded environments
  • Experience engaging with sponsors and their industry partners
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS or MS Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline and 10 years experience in cyber research and development
  • MS Degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity or related field
  • Experience with various IDEs (MS Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.) and collaboration tools
  • Experience with software development principles, tools, and techniques
  • Experience with software development using other higher and lower-level languages
  • Experience with developing security plans and working with information assurance
  • Advanced experience with three or more of the basic qualifications
  • High level desire to help their nation solve its most critical challenges
  • Ability to work with others to solve challenging technical problems
  • Experience leading a team of engineers for sponsor mission impact
  • Experience conducting low-level technical research
