Department Summary:
The Airborne Battle Management and Command and Control (ABMC2) department is seeking a skilled systems engineer with expertise in aircraft avionics and an interest in joining our dynamic department to assist in defining the future of airspace sharing and utilization. Our sponsors seek our engineering expertise to chart future navigation requirements to ensure their military aircraft have the required capabilities and performance to effectively operate in and across the National and International Airspace. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of airborne navigation systems, including their certification, and both U.S. and international civil and military aviation standards. Having an understanding of Identification Friend and Foe (IFF) systems is a plus. As part of the ABMC2 team, you will work with U.S. and international partners to enhance the effectiveness of airborne platforms to operate safely and assist in shaping future navigation systems and standards. This role offers the opportunity to provide innovative system engineering support to BMC2 and Global Flight Operations (GFO), and to contribute to mission requirements analysis and technology tradeoffs.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Contribute to an engineering team that develops, analyzes, and verifies USAF technical and system requirements for those systems required to safely fly nationally and internationally.
- Conduct technical analyses of Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) requirements to interpret applicability to and assess compliance of United States Air Force (USAF) platforms, advising on test approaches and needed modifications.
- Collaborate with the Department of Defense (DoD) certification authorities to identify impacts to USAF platforms and ensure they meet changing certification requirements.
- Participate in international standards bodies such as AEEC, ICAO, and RTCA to influence requirements pertaining to global civil airspace access.
- Evaluate CNS/ATM system designs for foreign partner aircraft programs and compare to standards, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Optionally develop into a subject matter expert (SME) for the International Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms supported by sponsors and assume a technical leadership role in IFF and transponder systems.
Basic Qualifications
- Familiarity with aircraft avionics or radar systems
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, communication, and briefing skills to interact with team members and sponsors
- Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with at least one of the following: communication, navigation, surveillance, or air traffic management systems
- Experience with development or analyzing requirements Experience with military air platform development, manufacturing or operations
- Experience with Modeling and Simulation, Radar Engineering, Sensors and Sensor Systems
- Experience with airborne early warning and control platforms
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field
