Group 23 is seeking a Level 2 IT Systems Administrator for the Biological and Chemical Technologies Group to provide Program level general software, hardware and network IT support for end-users as well as to test-bed systems and lab environments. The Systems Administrator will need to develop creative technical solutions to complex IT problems under general supervision, and must be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Candidates must be experienced with the installation, configuration and management of Windows operating systems, and some familiarity/experience with Linux and Mac OS is strongly desired. This position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks at a time. The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative, service-based approach to IT, and will work in concert with Laboratory IT Support, bringing them in when applicable.

Job Description

  • All work to be performed in-house at MIT/LL, providing onsite and remote general user and program support.
  • Install, configure and manage Microsoft Windows 10 Desktop / Server as well as Apple OSX operating systems, at times working with Central IT.
  • Implement scripts and other automation tools to patch software and operating systems in compliance with best practices.
  • Remediate vulnerabilities and maintain compliance with security policies
  • Review and test hardware and software applications and make recommendations for purchases.
  • Support installation, maintenance, repair and upgrades of computer and network equipment.
  • Assist with Linux desktop/server environments, including Red Hat / CentOS and Ubuntu distributions.
  • Ability to collaborate analytically with team members in a problem-solving environment
  • Inventory and track hardware and software licenses.
  • Documentation of IT procedures.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of computer hardware (including peripheral equipment), and software packages.
  • Ability to research, diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and networking problems.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Operating systems and Office 365 Cloud suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook)
  • Experience with net-based collaboration applications such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, MS Active Directory and LDAP.
  • Experience with remote support utilities such as Remote Desktop and SSH.
  • Experience working with in-house and remotely-connected end users in troubleshooting, and project support.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a Systems Administrator or IT support role.
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, MIS, or Engineering desired, but not required
  • Ability to achieve and maintain CompTIA Security+ certification.

Desired Skills

  • Experience supporting Mac OS systems.
  • Experience navigating Dell Sales and Support websites.
  • Experience administering Linux environment including CentOS, RHEL, and Ubuntu.
  • General experience with Virtualization technologies (VMware, vCenter, Hyper-V, etc.)
  • Strong customer service skills, and the ability to communicate instructions clearly.
