The Tactical Space Systems Group (Group 96) develops technologies and prototypes to enhance the performance and resilience of U.S. space systems and to provide flexible new space capabilities to the U.S. Government. The Group executes both large-scale system prototypes including satellite payloads and ground systems, as well as earlier stage technology development and demonstration programs with partner groups across the laboratory. The group is predominantly composed of scientists and engineers with expertise in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, electronics and software/firmware.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Tactical Space Systems Group (Group 96) develops technologies and prototypes to enhance the performance and resilience of U.S. space systems and to provide flexible new space capabilities to the U.S. Government. The Group executes both large-scale system prototypes including satellite payloads and ground systems, as well as earlier stage technology development and demonstration programs with partner groups across the laboratory. The group is predominantly composed of scientists and engineers with expertise in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, electronics and software/firmware.

Group 96 is seeking an IT Systems Administrator Level II with a diverse set of IT activities and requirements including significant work with Linux-based real-time processing systems in addition to maintaining desktop systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The candidate’s responsibilities with general supervision will include:

  • Serving as a frontline interface to users with technical issues. Understanding computing needs, providing technical solutions and support to users, updating system configurations, solving user problems with application compatibility, installation, operating system upgrades and maintaining backup systems.
  • Setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining documentation, tuning system performance, installing and maintaining system-wide software, and allocating mass storage space.
  • Making recommendations for HW and SW purchases. Interacting with third-party technology vendors. Conducting system analysis and development to keep systems current with changing technologies.
  • May develop and configure system specifications that address functional requirements. May design and plan network systems, design and/or install wide-scale internal voice and data communications networks (LAN/WAN), and conduct testing of network systems.
  • Work and partner with other departments to subscribe/ensure IT and Security services (RMF and compliance) for Group members.
  • Potential for supporting field deployed IT systems as needed by the group.
  • Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work in a team-oriented environment with minimal supervision. Candidates must also be motivated self-starters, able to work individually, or within a group to achieve program goals and objectives, under the direction of MIT LL’s technical project manager. Problem solving ability is critical.

  • This position will be 100% onsite due to the nature of the work. There may be some remote flexibility on a case by case basis but there are no regular remote days
  • Candidates should be able to get a DoD clearance (secret/top secret, etc.) in order to be considered for this position due to the nature of the work being done. Do not submit candidates who may have an issue getting a clearance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Understanding/experience or willingness to learn operating systems such as Linux, Windows Server/client OS, and virtualization technologies. Ability to perform system imaging, customization, configuration management, and maintenance of Windows, Mac and Linux systems in desktop, mobile, server, virtual, and field-test form factors
  • Experience applying software patch/antivirus updates/backups
  • Experience maintaining configuration management of system assets
  • Proven ability to quickly and effectively learn new technologies, adapt to new environments and methodologies, and work outside one’s own comfort zone
  • Prior experience working in a collaborative team environment with strong teamwork experience, self-motivation, and organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with the architecture of x86-based computer hardware, and comfortable configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining desktop and server-grade hardware

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Familiarity with common scripting languages, e.g. sh/csh /zsh, Perl, and Python, for automation of common systems administration tasks
  • Familiarity managing network switches, routers, and various cryptographic hardware desired
  • Ability to learn security lockdown policies to operating systems through group policy and local settings
  • Familiarity developing and administering various sized LAN/WAN environments
  • Experience in DoD Industrial Security is desired
  • Familiarity working with NIST 800-53 / Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) 503
  • Knowledge of security procedures (NISPOM, ICD-503, DJSIG)

EDUCATION REQUIRMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer and Information Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, OR a Master’s degree and a minimum of 1 years of experience
  • Technical experience and skills, course work completed towards a degree, and industry IT certifications may be considered substitutes for education and DoD security experience
