Job Summary

Role Overview
A Systems Engineer II on the Digital Infrastructure team is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable, reliable systems that support clinical and research imaging across Mass General Brigham (MGB). The role emphasizes automation, cloud infrastructure, virtualization, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), while also contributing to broader architectural planning and operational support.
The Digital Infrastructure team provides 24/7 support and plays a critical role in aligning infrastructure technologies and services with the strategic goals of MGB's Digital Infrastructure. This includes a wide range of infrastructure components such as internal department systems, MGB-hosted services, server hardware and operating systems, virtualization platforms, storage, databases, image archives, and associated management and monitoring tools.
In addition to system design and DevOps-focused responsibilities, the Systems Engineer II contributes to infrastructure architecture planning, deployment, and lifecycle management—including provisioning, inventory management, patching, automation, and vendor coordination. The team collaborates closely with clinical and research stakeholders to ensure technology solutions effectively support imaging initiatives, and is accountable for maintaining secure, resilient, and efficient infrastructure systems across environments.


Key Responsibilities
• System Design & Implementation: Design, build, and manage robust, scalable, and secure systems and infrastructure.
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar.
• Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Continuously monitor systems, proactively detect performance issues, and troubleshoot incidents to ensure reliability.
• Automation: Develop scripts and automation tools to streamline repetitive tasks across development and operations, including using MECM (Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager) or similar tools for patching and deployment of applications.
• Cloud Infrastructure Management: Deploy, manage, and optimize workloads on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Continuous Improvement: Stay current with DevOps trends, tools, and best practices to enhance team efficiency.
• 24/7/365 Support: Participate in 24/7/365 support for imaging systems to ensure the reliability and availability of critical clinical and research systems.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Information Systems required or Master's Degree Information Systems preferred
  • Can this role consider experience in lieu of a degree? Yes
  • Prior related experience as a systems engineer or related position 3-5 years required

Required Skills

  • Programming/Scripting: Proficient in Python, Bash, or other scripting languages.
  • Configuration Management: Experience with tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Terraform, and Packer.
  • Cloud Platforms: Solid working knowledge of AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Virtual Infrastructure: Familiarity with managing and maintaining virtualized environments using VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix.
  • Operating Systems: Strong expertise in Windows Server OS as the primary skill, with secondary experience in Linux or Unix systems administration.
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Optional/Preferred Skills

  • CI/CD Tools: Hands-on experience with tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, CircleCI, SLURM, and other CI/CD tools.
  • Networking: Basic understanding of networking principles and protocols.
  • Containerization: Experience with Docker, and managing containerized applications.
  • Orchestration: Working knowledge of orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Monitoring Tools: Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, and CrowdStrike.
  • Databases: Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server for basic tasks such as backups, restores, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work closely with developers, QA, and other stakeholders to ensure infrastructure meets software and business requirements.
  • Previous experience in the Healthcare industry: Understanding of healthcare systems, applications, and regulatory compliance within a healthcare environment.
  • Performance Optimization: Identifying performance bottlenecks and applying tuning to ensure high availability and responsiveness.
  • Cloud Backup with Rubrik: Experience with cloud backup and disaster recovery solutions using Rubrik.
