Principal Systems Development Engineer

Our customers’ systems are highly complex, and minimizing downtime is paramount. Operating from our Round Rock, TX location, the Principal D4D Sustaining Engineering role focuses on Design for Diagnostics (D4D), a critical engineering discipline centered on ensuring that systems are built with the necessary instrumentation, telemetry, and fault isolation capabilities to quickly and accurately identify problems when they occur.

This role combines hardware and software systems design, data analytics, and diagnostic automation to meet these critical demands. We focus on leveraging high-volume field data to drastically enhance the quality, serviceability, and diagnostics capability of PowerEdge servers. Our goal is to transform raw signals into fully automated diagnostic and corrective actions, significantly reducing the need for human intervention.

Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as a Principal Systems Development Engineer on our Systems Development Engineering Team in Round Rock, Texas, Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

What you’ll achieve
As a Principal Systems Development Engineer you will be the key driver in translating real-world field data into diagnostic intelligence. You will define and implement complex system requirements to make diagnostics more efficient and reduce overall system downtime.

You will:

  • Analyze large, complex datasets (telemetry, logs, alerts) from deployed systems to identify critical, recurring failure patterns and service pain points
  • Design and implement diagnostic logic and algorithms within the product architecture (firmware, software, and tools) to automatically detect, isolate, and potentially self-heal hardware and software issues
  • Drive Design for Diagnostics (D4D) feature requirements into next-generation products, defining the necessary telemetry, instrumentation, and fault isolation techniques.
  • Collaborate across global teams (Product Engineering, Quality, Service) to ensure diagnostic solutions are effectively integrated into the entire product and service ecosystem
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation for automated diagnostic programs, procedures, and system specifications

Take the first step towards your dream career
Every Dell Technologies team member brings something unique to the table. Here’s what we are looking for with this role:

Essential Requirements

  • 8 to 12 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree or 6+ years with a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, data science, or a closely related technical field
  • Advanced understanding of complex system architectures, specifically the interaction between hardware, firmware, and operating system software
  • Deep, demonstrable knowledge of diagnostic methodologies and sustaining engineering principles, with a clear focus on improving field serviceability and customer experience.
  • Expertise in using SQL and Python to gather data from the data lake and proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and PowerBI for data analysis
  • Ability to transform raw field telemetry signals into concrete, deployable diagnostic actions and automated, closed-loop workflows

Desirable Requirements

  • Familiarity with PowerEdge hardware, iDRAC, BIOS, and experience utilizing Machine Learning, statistical modeling, or pattern recognition for predictive failure analysis and anomaly detection
  • Familiarity with industry-standard telemetry, logging infrastructure, and advanced understanding of product reliability engineering principles and their application in diagnostics

Compensation

Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this position is $157,250.00 - $203,500.00.
