Description

The Systems & Network Engineer supports MDAA’s IT operations and infrastructure. This position assists with maintaining servers, networks, and end-user systems across the Commonwealth. The role provides Tier II and Tier III support, helps implement new technologies, and works closely with senior engineers, district IT staff, and vendors to ensure reliable and secure operations.

This position reports to the Chief Systems Engineer and Chief Network Engineer and supports both local and remote sites statewide. The primary work location is 99 Summer Street, Boston, MA, Monday through Friday. Travel, on-call rotation, and occasional weekend support may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as direct backup to the Chief Systems Engineer and Chief Network Engineer.
  • Monitor SD-WAN Network health, open vendor trouble tickets, and follow through to resolution.
  • Monitor and maintain Cisco routers and switches deployed locally and across the Commonwealth.
  • Serve as a member of the help desk team and provide Tier II/III technical support to district IT staff.
  • Assist in maintaining the DAA server infrastructure, both physical and virtual.
  • Perform system monitoring, backups, and basic disaster recovery tasks.
  • Assist with Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and Office 365 administration.
  • Work closely with MDAA managers, district IT staff, and vendors on projects and problem resolution.
  • Help manage hardware and software inventory, license renewals, and replacement cycles.
  • Participate in equipment upgrades, including imaging, deployment, and configuration.
  • Assist in maintaining security patching.
  • Contribute to the development of migration and upgrade plans for district offices.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts and protocols (Cisco experience preferred).
  • Familiarity with Palo Alto Firewalls, Symantec AV, Veeam or similar technologies a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, VMWare, Entra and Office 365.
  • Understanding of LAN/WAN technologies and common networking tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical support for servers, networks, or computing infrastructure.

Preferred Certifications

  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Cisco CCNA

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in IT support, systems administration, or networking.
