Job Description

About the Role

We are looking for a senior engineer with deep expertise in Android’s native audio stack — from AudioFlinger through the Audio HAL and vendor DSP layers. This role focuses on forward-looking Android audio development, including Android 16 and Android 17 feature changes, low-latency paths, immersive formats, and system-level optimizations for AR/VR/gaming workloads.

This is not an application-layer position. You will be working inside native Android internals, customizing and extending the audio pipeline, and collaborating with system partners to deliver next-generation audio features.

Responsibilities

  • Modify, extend, and optimize AudioFlinger and related system services

  • Integrate and customize Audio HAL (AHAL) implementations across OEM or SoC platforms

  • Support strategies for immersive audio, spatial rendering, post-processing, and head-tracking workflows

  • Work across JNI, vendor effect engines, DSP firmware, and post-processing chains

  • Track and adopt changes landing in Android 16/17 (AIDL transitions, LE Audio improvements, XR-related changes)

  • Profile and debug audio latency, glitching, underruns, synchronization issues

  • Work with silicon vendors (Qualcomm, MediaTek, etc.) to tune and verify audio behavior

  • Support multi-channel, multi-device, and advanced routing use cases (gaming headsets, mixed reality devices, BLE Audio)

Required Experience

  • 8+ years building or modifying the Android audio stack, BSP, or embedded audio systems

  • Deep hands-on experience with AudioFlinger, AAudio/OpenSL ES, and the Audio HAL

  • Expert in C/C++, JNI, and Android’s native build system

  • Experience with effect engines, DSP tuning, and audio routing

  • Familiarity with Android’s evolution in spatial audio, LE Audio, and XR/VR use cases

  • Experience debugging at the framework, HAL, and kernel driver levels

Nice to Have

  • Contributions to AOSP or vendor HALs

  • Familiarity with HIDL to AIDL migration paths in the audio stack

  • Background with Bluetooth LE Audio LC3, Auracast, or predictive head-tracking

  • Experience with spatial audio pipelines, ambisonics, 3DOF/6DOF head tracking, or headset rendering

  • Knowledge of popular game engines, headset OSs, or XR audio architectures

What Success Looks Like

  • Stable, low-latency playback and capture under load

  • Clean integration of new immersive audio features

  • Strong collaboration with DSP, hardware, and silicon partners

  • Forward-compatible audio design aligned with upcoming Android platform updates
